Selecting welded steel mechanical tubing for plating
How starting finish affects final cost
Tube purchasing is changing. At more and more
companies, the buyer is no longer simply a gatekeeper, concentrating
on holding the line on purchasing variances. Today's agents are
digging far deeper into the price/value relationship, looking to
their suppliers to define and demonstrate the added value that can
differentiate goods otherwise considered commodities.
In any cross section, the quality of an incoming
welded tube's finish has a significant impact on the final
cost of the plated product.
As an example of this price/value trade-off, some
specifiers of high-frequency resistance-welded, cold-rolled carbon
steel mechanical tubing, which is to be plated for enhanced
appearance, can save 20 to 30 percent net by paying 30 to 40 percent
more for tubing stock with a superior surface finish as delivered.
In this case, a slightly higher price results in a much higher
value.
